Evie’s Birth Story

Dawn’s positive homebirth using Hypnobirthing

Read the extraordinary story of how Sarah used her Hypnobirthing knowledge to birth two babies, 16 months apart.

Hello, I gave birth to a beautiful girl last night. It was absolutely magical.

On Tuesday I felt really sleepy and absolutely ravenous, I chilled on top of my bed for most of the day with lots of trips to get snacks, at dinner time I felt a trickle and a bit damp, so I called triage. I wasn’t having any contractions but felt a bit like I had my period as my thighs and back were a wee bit crampy.

We went to bed as usual, slept normal & woke up around 6am on Wednesday for a pee and when I wiped there was a pink tinge. I text my midwife (who was off till Friday - gutted) and she said just to call the Homebirth team and give them an update, they just said to monitor it, throughout the day. As more of my mucus plug came away, the crampy feeling in my back was getting stronger and it started creeping to the front.

I used my surge breathing for as long as I could and then at around 3pm I stuck the TENS machine on. I did loads of deep breathing. I listened to the hypnobirthing track and had dinner at around 6pm. I’d just managed to finish it when the surges started getting really strong.

My mum arrived at 7pm and I had my hypnobirthing track on but had just had a big, long double contraction so was a bit teary. She calmed me down by rubbing my thighs and reminding me to breath slowly. We called the midwife & Mark began setting up the pool. Once the pool was set up Mark nipped out to get some snacks and literally as soon as he left my contractions got really intense and I had an urge to push.

My mum kept me calm and told me to use little blows (like blowing out candles) instead of pushing - it was really hard to stay focused, but I definitely noticed less pain when I breathed into the surge.

The midwife arrived at around 8.20pm and by this point I was on my knees on the floor holding onto the side of my bed. The room was nice and dark just with a pink salt lamp on. The midwife had a quick read of my notes and listened in to baby’s heartbeat and then told me that she was off to get some more towels as baby wanted to come now. My mum had to call Mark to come back from the snack run, (thankfully all snacks had been collected!).

I think there were maybe five big surges and then she arrived at 9:03pm - it was absolutely amazing! I had a tiny tear that they stitched mostly for cosmetic reasons (didn’t feel a thing - I thought of the fear tension pain thing so just kept breathing through it and stayed calm). Everything was tidied away whilst I got some amazing skin to skin in my own bed.

Hypnobirthing and having a homebirth we’re absolutely amazing. I still can’t believe it! I’m convinced those big surge breaths and really working at not tensing up were why it was so quick and easy - I was expecting a few days of graft but there wasn’t even time to get the gas and air set up!
